Hertje is an anthropomorphic White-Tailed Buck (Odocoileus virginianus), typically lean & bipedal standing at about 5 foot 9 (without taking antlers into account) but can also be quadrapedal, around 3 feet tall at the shoulder. His antlers are medium-large, standard and symmetrical, with 4 tines each. His fur is soft, short, and uniform save for a tuft of dark brown hair sitting comfortably between the brow tines (when quad, this is represented as a dark, coarse strip of fur starting at the forehead and terminating at the upper back of the head). When anthro, he sports a pair of glasses, though their efficacy is disputed. He has 4-or-5-finger hands with hoof "nails" for fingertips, and his feet are modified hooves with the heel dropped into a plantigrade stance.
As a quad/feral he usually bands along with a majority-doe herd. Though prone to aggression during the rut, he is for the most part docile and passive, acting with hostility only in self defense or in defense of his herdmates. His rutting behavior is unique compared to other whitetails in that he mates for life; sparring with other bucks is usually only for power display and keeping other bucks' distance from his doe, and other females are (perhaps mercifully) spared. Though nearly always depicted as a Whitetail, Hertje can also be depicted as an Elk (that is, Cervus canadensis, for any Europeans) or Mule Deer depending on how I'm feeling.
In the real world, William is a stout, lean, straight male in his young adulthood situated cozily somewhere in the Midwest. His time is usually spent working his part-time job, attending local meets, tinkering with vintage electronics, getting a little too into nature documentaries, and spending time with the love of his life. His favorite animals include but are in no way limited to cervines, kangaroos, mustelids, and cetaceans (as well as ungulates as a whole.)
